The Monroe County Legislature has a new president.

County legislators meet Wednesday night to complete a meeting that originally started a day earlier in an effort to elect a new legislature president.

After one failed vote Wednesday, legislators finally managed to elect Yversha Roman as president.

Roman, a Democrat, was selected in a 16 to 13 vote.

The District 26 representative previously served as the legislature's Minority Caucus leader.

“This is a historic evening in Monroe County history," Monroe County Legislature Vice President Mercedes Vazquez-Simmons said in a statement. "We have a Latina President and vice-President! I’m so proud to be part of this moment."

“I would like to thank President Yversha Roman and Majority Leader Michael Yudelson for working through difficult issues over the past few weeks,” Legislator Rachel Barnhart said in a statement. “Throughout this process, I have maintained that reaching consensus among Democrats would lead to a stronger, healthier caucus that can deliver for the community.”
