Monroe County is expanding Code Blue services and outreach through partnerships with the YWCA and Project Haven.

The county is adding 41 more beds at warming centers, bringing the total to 141.

There will also be free transportation to warming centers from the transit center.

Code Blue is activated when the wind chill falls under 32 degrees. It was initiated on Nov. 21 in Monroe County and will end when weather conditions permit, county officials say.

“Our team continues to work diligently to ensure that each person has a secure and welcoming place to warm up or to sleep during our coldest days,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said in a statement. “These additional shelters, beds and transportation assistance will save lives and I am grateful for the Department of Human Services team and our partner organizations who have been working for many months to make it happen.”

The YWCA and Project Haven join the Open Door Mission and House of Mercy as warming centers/shelters. The YWCA facility will open for use as a warming center and shelter on Dec. 18.
