Ogden police officers are giving “tickets” to kids caught doing the right thing.

The Ogden Police Department handles all kinds of emergencies to keep life running smoothly around the town and in the village.

What You Need To Know

  • Ogden Police Officers are on duty seven days a week, 24 hours a day

  • Officers are giving kids tickets for free Slurpees at the village 7-Eleven if they see them riding a bike with a helmet on

  • Ogden Police Chief Travis Gray and his team will be giving out helmet tickets for free Slurpee’s all summer long

“Our town is 38 mi.². We have 14 officers total and two of them are part time,” Ogden Police Chief Travis Gray said. “The town population if you include the village is somewhere around 24,000 people.”

This time of year there are so many people out enjoying the weather. It’s a good time for officers to connect with kids, in a positive way.

“Sometimes we are just driving through the village and sometimes we walk to talk to people and when we come across kids doing the right thing and wearing their helmets we like to reward that," said Gray.

The reward? When Gray and officers see kids riding bikes with a helmet on they stop them and give them a “citation.” It’s actually a certificate for a free Slurpee at 7-Eleven in the village. It’s a sweet incentive to reinforce safe riding.

“Absolutely, anytime we can engage the public and especially kids in a positive manner, it is worth it, “said Gray.

New York state law requires children under the age of 14 to wear a helmet while biking. Bike helmets can prevent serious head injuries.
