Debbie Evans is the founder and executive director of the Irondequoit Community Cupboard. She’s got a heart of gold and a team of volunteers behind her who helped renovate the new space, build shelves and move everything from the old location.
“I am a little sentimental about leaving our other building because I’ve been there 17 years,” she explained. “It is our first real building and I am going to miss parts of it, like the neighborhood. But, I love this space and you don’t have to squeeze to get down the aisles anymore. We are all able to fit everything on one floor. I couldn't do it without this amazing team of volunteers."
Volunteers are organizing and restocking as quickly as possible to be able to resume food distribution come Tuesday, June 27. The community cupboard provides emergency food to more than 120 families a week so they are hustling to get it all done.
“It is a great cause and Debbie is amazing,” said volunteer Jeff Schron. “She’s got a heart bigger than her body, bigger than anyone. She’s here to help those in need of help. What is it, neighbors helping neighbors.”
The new location also has a drive-through and covered loading area. It's located at 2841 Culver Rd. near Rt. 104. If you are an Irondequoit resident in need of emergency food, please call (585) 336-9107.
