The New York Museum of Transportation is a fun family field trip that’s located about 20 minutes south of Rochester. The volunteer-run museum reopens for the summer season on Sunday and is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

It’s a walk around, and on, all kinds of vehicles. There are trolley cars, steam locomotives, buses and even an old New York State Thruway toll booth to check out.

What You Need To Know

  • The New York Museum of Transportation opens for its 50th year on Sunday, May 28

  • It houses fourteen full size trolley cars, a caboose, steam locomotive, antique highway, horse-drawn vehicles and other transportation history items

  • Sunday visits includes a scenic 2-mile round trip trolley ride with departures at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Jim Dierks has been a museum volunteer since 1979.

“We love transportation history and we like sharing it with the public and opening their eyes to the way people got around a long time ago,” said Dierks. “We’ve got a little bit of everything, plus a model railroad and things like that. The Midtown Plaza Monorail, there’s transportation for you. It brings back a lot of memories for people.”

The 40 or so volunteers fix, run and maintain everything in the museum.

“Basically, before we run the car we are checking the journal boxes to make they’ve got oil. If it’s not coming up the bottom of the axle we put a couple of pumps of journal oil in to the bottom of the axle,” said volunteer Jay Consadine.

The 20-minute electric trolley ride is fun for all ages. You can just imagine all the people riding it back in the day. It’s a picturesque ride through the rolling hills.

“We’re always looking for more volunteers. We’d be glad to have some people who would like to operate the trolley, help us in the gift shop and help us run the model railroad. These are all labor-intensive jobs that are important to show transportation history to people,” said Dierks.

Opening day is Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $6 for kids ages 3-12. Trolley rides are included in the cost of admission. The museum operates every Sunday and also hosts some special events throughout the summer. It's located at 6393 East River Rd. in Rush.
