Since 2017, Ruth Travers and her dog Orbit have been inseparable.

"The two of us were obsessed with each other from the beginning,” said Travers. "That’s actually where his name came from, he was always in my orbit, always walking around and circling me.”

Travers is a self-proclaimed dog nerd and watched the Westminster dog show growing up. Now, her and orbit are competing there.

"When showing him, I kind of have him strike a pose", explains Travers.

This is the pair’s first trip to the Westminster show, but Orbit has some pretty big titles to his name already.

“2022 was a great year for us, we won a lot,” Travers said. “He ranked the number two Vahland in the nation.”

Which makes sense because Orbit is not shy about showing off.

“My husband and I joke that he think’s he’s a person because he just has so much personality and is just such a happy dog,” said Travers.

Westminster is called a confirmation show. One of the things judges watch for is how well the dog walks.

“What we’re encouraging is a steady trot, we don’t want them to run. Sometimes they do because they’re a dog,” said Travers.

Dog showing might’ve been Travers dream growing up but now it’s one she’s sharing with her family.

"She loves going to the dog shows with us", said Travers about her young daughter. "She's broken out of her stroller to come into the ring with us once.”

Thousands of dogs enter the Westminster show, but for Obit, it’s just another day at the park.

“I think I get nervous sometimes, but he doesn’t at all,” Travers said. “Which is helpful for me because if I get nervous and he's not we kind of feed of that.”
