Two Rochester high school security officers were honored for their quick response to last month's shooting at Franklin High School.
Rochester City Council recognized Sandra Beasley and Deverin Dillon at Tuesday night's monthly council session.
Both Beasley and Dillon pulled students to safety when a gunman opened fire near a school entrance. They then warned the rest of the school of the threat.
"We come to work every day not knowing what’s going to happen with our babies,” Dillon said. “Our babies are hurting. They got mental health going on. We’re not only SSOs, we're uncles, mothers, fathers and parents. We counsel.”
"We just did our job,” Beasley said.” That’s what we do. And when the kids come into the building, I understand they're your babies, but when they come into Franklin they're our babies. And we're not going to let anything happen to our babies."
Since the attack, the city has assigned Rochester police officers to monitor arrival and dismissal at five city high schools.
This comes as the Rochester Teacher's Association released the results of a poll of school leaders on safety concerns in the district.
RTA President Adam Urbanski says 81% of the leaders of city schools have safety concerns, especially in school parking lots.
Seven percent of those who responded to the poll said they feel "very safe" and 12% felt "somewhat safe."
