PERINTON, N.Y. — Here’s hoping spring will be here soon, because there are a whole lot of folks just itching to get their hands dirty in the garden.
The town of Perinton is inviting gardeners to join the community garden.
The Perinton Community Garden includes 88 garden beds at Potter Park on West Church Street in the village of Fairport. The town is accepting reservations now from any Fairport or Perinton resident who would like to rent a garden plot.
Perinton Director of Parks Chris Dudley is hoping to inspire people to be a part of parents and community garden.
“We are actually sending out bed assignments as we speak to the currently registered gardeners,” said Dudley. “Each of the gardeners all have their own plots and they are growing everything from tomatoes to squash and beans. All different types of vegetables."
Soon the garden will be busy with people gardening, greens growing and flowers blooming. It’s just $28 per year per garden bed. There’s even a garden coordinator to help you grow the best garden you can.
“We recognize that we will have people come in and rent six or seven beds every year and this is their primary garden,” said Dudley. “We also have a number of families where this is their first try at a garden. We recognize that we are going to have all skill levels in the garden and we have to help them learn to work with each other and create a community within the garden.”
Gardeners will be celebrating their 11th harvest this year. The garden beds are 8’ x 4.’ They are having some of the beds repaired. Eagle Scouts have built a lot of them. People will start tending to the garden beds as early as next month.
If you are a Fairport or Perinton resident interested in renting a garden plot, you can register by calling the Town of Perinton at (585) 223-5050.
