Bryasia Love, 26, is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault.

RPD says last Thursday they were called to a home on Joseph Avenue by a mother reporting her child was unresponsive. At the home, they found 1-year-old A'Mias Love with what they called “significant” life-threatening injuries. He died at the hospital this past Tuesday.

Also at this time, a 2-year-old daughter was found with alleged signs of assault, but is expected to be OK. She has been released from a hospital and is in the care of her grandmother. An order of protection is now in place to keep the mother away from the surviving child.

“When something like this happens to a child, it’s just heartbreaking for all of us,” Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said.

There were heated moments between the defendant and some relatives of the children during the proceedings Friday.

“I think that you can certainly imagine from the family members of the child here that this is an incredibly emotional experience, so I think that’s what you’re seeing, raw emotions playing out in court. This is real life, it’s not just what you see on TV," said Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Sara Van Strydonck, chief of Special Victims Unit. “We have information to believe that she was alone with her children and caused these injuries, that she was the only person to cause these injuries. That’s where the investigation led us. I can tell you that prosecuting a lot of these crimes, there’s strong indication to believe that.”

The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office confirms that authorities, including Child Protective Services, had no reports about these children prior to last week when the police investigation was opened.

“I can tell you that CPS was not active or open with this family at the time," said Van Strydonck.

Love entered not guilty pleas to the charges and is being held without bail. She will return to court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 31.

Monroe County released a statement on the incident, which reads:

"The death of A’Mias Love is a terrible tragedy and we thank the Rochester Police Department for their diligent investigation. We are sure the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office will secure justice for A’Mias. Prior to A’Mias’ death, Monroe County Child Protective Services had no open cases concerning him or his surviving sibling. However, there are now ongoing police and Child Protective Services investigations and the county is not able to provide additional comment."
