ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new tool, the LUCAS device, is a machine that takes over chest compressions for paramedics. It’s something helpful to use when transporting patients.

"When we're getting ready to transport that specific patient, when we have to transport the home down the stairs, and then once we place them in the ambulance for transport, that takes over that manual need for compressions and keeps it nice and even and keeps it precise,” said firefighter and paramedic Adam Baglin.

Barnard is the only fire station in Monroe County to have paramedics onboard engines.

They’ve already used the LUCAS device in the field since purchasing it.

"We had two encounters throughout the year and the people that were mostly a positive outcome for one device,” said Baglin. "It’s just another tool in the toolbox to help patients in rare situations.”

That tool comes at a time when CPR training is being talked about more than ever, after paramedics used it to save Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, when his heart stopped during a game in Cincinnati two weeks ago.

"What is critical to saving a patient before they arrive is early notification to 911 and then prompt CPR, starting CPR, which anybody in the community can do,” said Fire Chief Stephen Andrews.

The Barnard station is offering a community class that is open to anyone looking to learn.

The CPR training class is happening on Feb. 11 at the Greece Odyssey Academy.

Sessions are free and begin at 9 a.m.
