ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Many city buildings and government offices are closed as events are being held across Rochester on Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Rochester City Hall, neighborhood service centers, the Rochester Public Library, R-Centers, and other city offices are all closed. Garbage and recycling pickup is suspended and will resume on Tuesday.

There is a Skate to Commemorate event at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park downtown.

The rink will be open for ice skating at the following times:

  • Noon - 1:30 p.m.
  • 1:50 - 3:10 p.m.
  • 3:40 - 5:10 p.m.
  • 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
  • 7:20 - 8:50 p.m.

The admission fee of $2 will be waived with a donation of two non-perishable hygiene, cleaning or household items. Skate rentals are $3.

At the Eastman Theatre, it's the MLK Day Community Celebration. There is a free musical event and keynote speaker Suzan Johnson Cook, goddaughter of Coretta Scott King.

Finally, at the Strong Museum of Play, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Compassion is taking place. Kids can enjoy puppet plays, get engaged in fine arts and paint their own watercolor peace sign.
