The Monroe County Sheriff's Office and Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo provided an update Monday afternoon on an ongoing investigation into missing funds from the clerk’s office.

In June, Romeo says the clerk's office became aware of 16 mortgage discharge checks that were stolen, altered and then cashed. The total amount of money missing is adding up to about $32,000. That's when officials say the clerk's office turned to sheriff's deputies for help.

Since the initial 16 checks went missing, Romeo says there have not been any instances of checks disappearing.

"Immediately upon reviewing this, the clerk's office took immediate action to make sure we reviewed all of our internal systems and protocols and made the necessary changes,” Romeo said. "And we're very happy to say we're not seeing any future instances of this going forward at this time."

There is no timetable for the investigation and anyone who believes their check wasn't properly discharged is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
