ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Many people spent this year’s Labor Day weekend cheering their favorite marching band at the Drum Corps Academy Championships. Hosting the event for its 20th time, Rochester has been selected to have the event held again for next year.
Many fans attended the event, like Daniel Ritchie who has been supporting the Drum Corps for nearly 60 years.
“I have a Hawthorne Caballeros hat and on my jacket. I have a pin here from 1979,” Ritchie said. “I have collected memorabilia throughout the years, and even had experienced being on a marching band myself in Fulton.”
Just like Ritchie, many fans have come out to the event to support their family and friends and even learn a trick or two.
“I am a drum major in our high school marching band so we are excited to see how they implement their skills into a higher level experience,” Gates Chili marching band volunteer Cecelia Gardner said. “Once our work is done I am excited to watch the show and see the performers.”
Throughout the three-day event, Sunday evening hosts the finals of the DCA Championships, where 12 drum corps battle it out for the championship title.
“I am from Fulton and drove about an hour and a half here,” Ritchie said. “I haven’t seen a drum corps show in 40 years or so. When I heard the show was going to be here I immediately went online and bought tickets."
This has given the opportunity for performers to engage and entertain for fans worldwide.
