ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New Yorkers are among those Americans taking to the streets, with people across the state holding demonstrations against the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
A 'Bans Off Our Bodies' rally took place in downtown Rochester Saturday.
Ruth Fogarty never thought she’d be upset to feel 20 again, or so her sign says. She protested Roe v. Wade being overturned, something she fought for 50 years ago.
“Our rights are eroding right before our eyes and people aren’t noticing,” said Fogarty. “How many women are going to be forced into back alley abortions? That was something we fought against, we fought against, and we know it will happen.”
Next to Ruth Fogarty was her granddaughter Ava. Both came out to fight for their right to have abortions Saturday in Rochester.
“I know I have the privilege and resources to find an abortion in New York state, but plenty of women wouldn’t so that’s who we’re here for,” said Ava.
Waving signs and cheering, hundreds showed solidarity for those across the county affected by Roe v. Wade being overturned.
Speakers from local organizations and Planned Parenthood shared messages with the crowd.
Zoe Frey and Erin Lant say they’re concerned about what the Supreme Court will look to overturn next.
“It’s not going to stop here,” said Frey. “We’re in a relationship and it’s scary to think about what’s next for us, for women of color and trans women.”
Zoe, Erin, Ruth, Ava and everyone else at the rally say events like this are the first step to making sure their rights are protected.
“Stop caring what people think and let your voice be heard because this is what’s going to make change,” said Frey.
The rally took place outside of city hall and lasted for an hour.
