GREECE, N.Y. — Police say two people were arguing inside the Walmart in Greece, and when they left, shots were fired outside the store in the parking lot.

“I was out here last night, I was ducking behind the wall, I just came out of Walmart," said Yvette Miller of Rochester, who describes what she heard when gunfire rang out. “Shots. Pop, pop, pop. What was that? I knew what it was because I know what gunshots sound like.

“So I ducked behind a wall. A man in his car said, 'that's got to be shots.' People are running. I just ducked behind the wall and I ran out into the street."

What You Need To Know

  • Greece police say two people were arguing inside the Walmart, and when they left, shots were fired outside the store in the parking lot

  • Nobody was struck by the gunfire

  • Police are searching for suspects

Nobody was hit by the gunfire, but the bullets did leave some damage.

“I mean, this is the first time somebody’s actually pulled a weapon and used it that involved a firearm, but it’s nothing new,” said Marzel, who did not offer his last name. “Most of the time it’s just Walmart.”

Marzel works at Walmart. He’s a cart collector.

“There’s not really any reason to worry about shopping here,” he said. “This is probably just a one-time thing. These days, you hear more about shootings and everything that’s going on. It really doesn’t matter, it’s just another place it could happen.”

Marzel says employees are trained for this type of event.

“They just usually just tell us, ‘make sure that everybody’s all right. Make sure that everybody’s as far away from the gunfire as possible. Make sure everybody contacts the police, and once they get here basically just follow everything the police say. Make sure that you keep your hands up and make sure that they know that you’re not the shooter.’ There’s basically a lot of steps that we cover.”

Despite the gunfire, Walmart is back open and seemingly quite busy. Even Miller is back as she takes the bus to and from this Walmart daily.

“I was scared. I was shook to death,” she said. “I was shook because I’m not knowing where it’s coming from. Yeah, it’s nighttime. It’s dark. It’s in the parking lot. You hear shots, not knowing where it’s coming from. You don’t know which way to run, which way to go. So I was shook up last night. That was an experience I’ve never experienced before, so I was kind of shook up.”
