ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Flower City Comic Con returned to Rochester over the weekend and thousands came to celebrate nerd culture.
People were asked to wear masks and vendors were spaced out for social distancing.
“We want to provide an opportunity for people in town to come out and celebrate whatever they’re a fan of with other fans,” co-director Brian Burke said.
For Cay Lafergola-Wesser, comic con is a place to celebrate things outside of traditional pop culture.
“We’re all nerds and when I was younger we didn’t have such a tight-knit community, but now it’s exploding,” Lafergola-Wesser said.
She’s a crafter who travels to comic cons across the area.
After hearing about Rochester’s Flower City Comic Con, Lafergola-Wesser decided to bring her creations here.
“Just seeing people light up when you bring their favorite fantasy stuff to life,” she said.
Dylan and her friends came dressed up as characters from their favorite shows or games.
"[We] get ourselves out there as who we are and what we love,” Dylan said.
Normally, the group attends five comic cons a year. They are glad to be back after many were canceled last year.
“One little girl started dancing with me, she loved my outfit,” Dylan said, who was dressed as Daisy from Mario. "I just want to make people smile, that’s why I do what I do.”
