When it comes to protecting ourselves from a fire, we can never get too much information from experts. If you're at the State Fair this year, a long time exhibit is in its usual spot with all kinds of information on how to avoid fires and what to do should a fire occur.
The Fire Prevention Education Center is located in the Science and Industry Building.
The exhibit is hosted by the State Department of Fire Prevention but local firefighters from several Onondaga County units, including the Syracuse Fire Department, have helped make this exhibit possible for decades.
Over time, they've given the Education Center upgrades, including the popular House of Hazards, where fairgoers can learn about the hazards in different rooms. Families are encouraged to stop in the Science and Industry Building throughout the duration of the fair.
You can walk through the house and learn about fire hazards in the kitchen, bedrooms and living room.
Fire officials are at the fair to hand out information on smoke detectors and other important fire safety tips. Daily puppet shows help children learn the information, but organizers say people of all ages can benefit.
"Everybody is welcome to come see it but it's geared toward the children. This year, we're teaching stop, drop and roll. So, they could learn what to do if their clothes were to catch on fire, and how to put the fire out without causing further injury to themselves," said Fire Prevention Education Director Tina Cali.
Believe it or not, the Fire Prevention Center first opened back in 1978. So, many fairgoers who bring their children here have memories of visiting the exhibit as children themselves. Cali said the exhibit has received several upgrades over time to better simulate fire situations.
Kids can also get a free fire helmet when they visit the exhibit during the fair. In addition to the House of Hazards, you can catch the daily puppet shows at noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day.
