It was a tough call for fair enthusiasts, vendors and entertainers alike when it was announced that the 2020 New York State Fair would be cancelled, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This year, with vaccine distribution well underway and more and more businesses and attractions reopening across the state, some are holding out hope to reenter the fairgrounds this summer once again.

Fair Director Troy Waffner says the Great New York State Fair could happen this year with proper planning.

Waffner says if it was up to him, a there would be a 2021 fair, even if it's at a limited capacity, but right now there's no definite answer to whether or not the Fair will be back this year.

"A good day here on the fairgrounds is still a day we could do and keep people socially distanced. It's gonna be a different fair. I mean, it's tough to go from a facility and an event where you plan on huge crowds and you love jamming people together, to one where you talk about social distancing. In Troy's world, that's what we would be doing," said Waffner.

Waffner says there are no plans being made at this time.
