ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Food, music and Latin dancing were all on display at the 51st Puerto Rican Festival in Rochester.
Saturday was the first day for the event and hundreds came out to celebrate their culture and heritage.
Alfred Borgos is hosting domino tournaments during the festival.
His game table features pictures of his hometown in Puerto Rico and artwork representing different elements in the culture.
The game is popular pastime in Puerto Rico and Borgos is glad to share it with the Rochester community.
“We’re Rochesterians. We’re Americans. We’re U.S. citizens — but we still like to celebrate that small tropical island” said Borgos.
Dominos were just one of the ways people celebrated the Puerto Rican culture at the International Plaza.
Dancing salsa to Latin music, grabbing empanadas and rice or waving the colors of Puerto Rico, people were proud to share their heritage.
For Samuel Borges and his wife, the festival gives the community a chance to experience Puerto Rican heritage in a positive light.
“We’re a small island,” said Borges. “We’re proud of our heritage and want to show it the right way. Having our music, food and people all portrayed right and not doing bad things.”
The festival runs next Saturday at Parcel 5 from 2 until 10 p.m.
