IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Days after Lisa Shuler was found dead in her Irondequoit home, police say they discovered some of her remains in Durand Lake on Monday.

What You Need To Know

  • Human remains discovered in Durand Eastman Park have been identified as belonging to an Irondequoit woman found dead last week
  • The Monroe County medical examiner's office has positively identified the remains as those of 37-year-old Lisa Shuler
  • The remains were found Monday in Durand Lake in Rochester, near the Irondequoit border, and reported to authorities

“I just couldn’t believe it,” said Je’rel Lewis of Rochester, a high school friend of Lisa Shuler. “Utter disbelief. I was shocked.”

Lewis describes Shuler as a great person, and adds she always had a positive spirit.

“She might have had a bad day, but you never would have known,” said Lewis. “That was one of the most important things that you can have in a friend, is being able to have someone that’s trustworthy, and someone that’s loyal, and she exuded all of those characteristics, honestly.”

Irondequoit police say when Shuler was found in her home last week, her body had been dismembered. Police confirmed Wednesday that remains found at Durand Lake belong to Shuler.

The details were heartbreaking for Lewis when he read about her death.

“I started reading the words ‘dismemberment’ and stuff like that,” said Lewis. “I shut down. I started shedding a tear for her and her family, and just couldn’t imagine what she would have been going through for the last moments of her life.”

The longtime friend says he wants justice for Shuler, and for everyone to remember the great person she was. Lewis is currently raising money for the family during this difficult time.

“We’re going to fight and do whatever we can, and just hope and pray through this difficult time that they will be OK, and that they have our support,” Lewis added.

Police say Shuler’s boyfriend, Seth Larson, is a person of interest in her death. Larson is said to have fled the area and was last seen in Maryland. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
