The New York National Guard says right now there are no plans to halt the use of Black Hawk helicopters following several crashes around the U.S., including one in Mendon that killed three guardsmen last month.
Those helicopters are used in medivac missions around the state.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on the U.S. Department of Defense to consider grounding the choppers as it investigates
"We know from aircraft accidents and aircraft failures that people's lives have been put at risk because they weren't grounded. So, if this is something that's similar, I would urge them to ground the entire fleet. If that can't be done for specific reasons, they should make that case," said Gillibrand.
The National Guard says training missions continue around the state but are on hold in Rochester as members continue to mourn the deaths of Steven Skoda, Christian Koch, and Daniel Prial. All three died when their helicopter crashed in a field off of West Bloomfield Road in Mendon.
New York National Guard Colonel Richard Goldenberg says any decision to ground the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter would have to come from the U.S. Army Safety Center.
