ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Museum and Science Center is celebrating some trailblazing women from the Rochester region who have done some pretty amazing things against the odds. The new 'Changemakers' exhibit shares 200 stories of past and present women trailblazers.
RMSC describes a changemaker as someone who persists against adversity and never gives up. The Rochester region is celebrating that grit and inspiration with the new exhibit.
It's a community curation some two years in the making with a lot of people offering their perspective and voices to create an inclusive space of 200 stories of lesser known women from diverse backgrounds, like Reverend Myra Brown, who is bringing community together as their spiritual calling. There’s also aerospace executive and former NASA astronaut and Space Shuttle commander Pamela Melroy and all that she’s done for women in space exploration.
"I think part of history is that there have been a lot of exclusions and so one of the things that we wanted to do is emphasize the contributions that women from all backgrounds have made and inspire everyone to be changemakers in their own lives and carry that legacy forward in their own lives," said Kathryn Murano Santos, RMSC director of collections and exhibits.
Much of the exhibit is hands-on. There are immersive spaces set up in a way so that everyone is able to find a role model in the exhibit who is like them.
"I just love all the women here because they helped everybody. You can just look at everyone and say those other people who change the world. I think I am happy that they did this because women rock," said elementary student London Hopgood.
The changemakers exhibit is on view through May 16.
