There are three candidates on the ballot in New York State’s 136th Assembly District. It’s a district that includes Brighton, Irondequoit, and other parts of Monroe County.
And it’s been empty since Jamie Romeo left to become Monroe County clerk.
Sarah Clark (D)
The Democrat running to fill the vacancy is Sarah Clark. The mom of three spoke with Spectrum News as she watched her daughter play soccer.
“I’m just a dedicated public servant, who cares a lot about doing what’s right and making sure all voices are listened to," said Clark.
Clark is not new to politics.
“I have been working in government for 20 years, in the United States Senate, and I just really have a passion for public service and serving our community," said Clark.
Clark addressed some of her top priority issues this past weekend with other Democratic politicians the day the polls opened for early voting.
“This is really about our values. This is about health care, this is about education, this is about the environment. We need people to come out and be sure their voices are heard so that we can have real change," said Clark.
Justin Wilcox (I)
The ballot lists the name of Monroe County Legislator Justin Wilcox on the Independence Party line in the 136th Assembly District. However, after a loss in the primary, he said he is not actively campaigning and therefore declined to participate in this story.
Steven Becker (L)
There is no Republican on the ticket.
However, the man running on the Libertarian line in the 136th, is hoping some conservatives and others will consider voting for him.
“I’m hoping that the pro-Constitution, pro-family people in the 136th see me as the logical alternative. As opposed to the big ever progressive kind of solutions that the Democrats offer, said Steven Becker.
The optometrist and avid boater discussed a recent increased interest in the Libertarian Party.
“It has been growing quite a bit. Happily, upstate seems to be a real hot bed,” Becker said.
Becker actively supports efforts to stop mounting government regulations and can be seen at pro-liberty rallies in our area.
"I’ve been to a lot of those, you know, Voices for Seniors, Rock for Education, Reopen Rochester,” he said.
For Becker, the platform is simple. He said it’s about voters having the ability to make their own choices.
“Peaceful, honest, voluntary cooperation is the libertarian solution,” he said. “You should be able to do with your life, your choices, as long as you aren’t harming anyone else, whatever you want.”
