CHILI, N.Y. — For the second year in the row, a Chili home has made the remarkable Halloween transformation into a pirate ship.

To say Tony Dematteo enjoys getting into the Halloween spirit is a bit of an understatement.

“We’ve been doing a Halloween display for about eight years,” Dematteo said. “It’s progressively gotten larger and larger, just with the amount of attention, support and excitement about it.”

For the last two years, his theme has been “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

“It’s a fifty foot ship; it has twenty foot masts on it. And we’ve incorporated a lot more special effects.” Dematteo said.

And every ship needs a captain.

“It’s a pirate ship, I’m a pirate. Let’s go do this, we’ll have some fun,” an actor, playing Disney's Captain Jack Sparrow, said.

On October 30, children will be able to meet Captain Jack and take socially distanced photos with him.

“It'll be nice and socially distanced. As you can see, there’s a rope, that’s my throne. I’ll be there,” he said.

But in a year that’s been tough for many, that event will be about more than just theatrics and special effects.

“We almost didn’t do anything, but then we decided it's probably a good idea to do something that will bring joy to people," Dematteo said. "And with the amount of attention we get, why not partner with a good charity and make it for a good cause?”

The Open Door Mission will be on site to collect donations for its homeless shelter. And a treasure chest will act as a drop-off box before then.

“Yeah, we want to show our talents by building stuff, but we also want to use that to raise awareness. Which I have done, and he’s doing now. Especially in this time of COVID-19, we have to help each other out,” Captain Jack said.

Through Halloween, light shows will run every Wednesday through Sunday from dusk to 6:30 p.m. at 15 Ambush Lane.
