It's the moment many parents have waited for: the reopening of summer camps. Because of COVID-19, in New York, that means a lot of new rules and safety measures.

What You Need To Know

  • Bristol Mountain's Adventure Camp has reopened

  • Children must undergo a temperature screening and wellness check

  • Campers spend as much time outdoors as possible

In a year that's been anything but normal, normal things are nice. That's why the sound of kids playing on a playground at Bristol Mountain's Adventure Camp is music to Steven Fuller's ears.

"We’re excited to have all the kids back," says Fuller, vice president of the family-owned ski resort, which has offered the summer camp for more than 30 years.

Fuller himself grew up attending Adventure Camp. Its 2020 opening coincided with the end of the school year, which also coincided with New York's go-ahead to safely open summer camps.

"It's a very detailed process," he says. "And certainly very different than most years, but all for the right reasons."

When camp opens in the morning, children must undergo a temperature screening and wellness check. Throughout the campsite, there is hand sanitizer. Children are encouraged to consistently wash their hands, and areas are disinfected after each use. Campers spend as much time outdoors as possible.

"With everything that's been going on, it's nice to have a little consistency," says Fuller.

Consistency is welcome, especially since the pandemic shut down Bristol Mountain's ski season in mid-March, about three weeks earlier than normal. With so many parents working from home or furloughed, the resort's child care is also closed.

"Yeah, it was very quiet here during those months," Fuller admits.

Now, Bristol Mountain is anything but quiet, which makes this summer adventure that much more special.
