In the age of internet commerce and economic activity online, some towns are looking to bridge the digital and real worlds.
The town of Irondequoit now has a safe place for people to exchange items sold online.
Meant to be a meeting area for people selling items on websites like Facebook and Craigslist, the addition of two safety zones will aid the city's public safety initiatives. The two zones will be located in parking areas outside of the police department.
The creation of the safety zone comes as part of a $160,000 grant secured by state senator Rich Funke to make public safety enhancements inside and outside of the police department.
"You’re selling to someone that you don’t necessarily know,” Funke said. “And you could be selling to somebody in a place, as the supervisor said, is unlit and you have to take additional precautions in this day and age"
The safety zones are monitored 24-hours a day by a taping system. The police department says the addition of these resources enhances the quality of life for people in the community.
