Dozens of animal lovers and curious residents packed the Naples town courthouse Thursday for the appearance of a couple accused of extreme animal abuse.
Richard and Jane Justice are charged with cruelty to an animal and failure to provide food and water to an impounded animal after 85 Cairn Terriers were rescued from their Naples home. Both pleaded not guilty to all charges Wednesday.
Residents say the couple was known to have large amounts of animals living in poor conditions.
"For years, people have been complaining and nothing has been done," said Susan Rector of Naples.
Because of the ongoing legal proceedings, the Naples 85 will continue to be in the care of the Ontario County Humane Society, although it has received many inquiries into adoption.
"We can still get these animals out into foster homes," said Diane Faas, Ontario County Animal Shelter manager. "That means they will be temporarily housed off-site but that is not a permanent arrangement for these dogs."
The shelter is preparing to care for the dogs in the interim. They ask anyone interested in physical donations or volunteering to call ahead, monetary donations can be made through their website.
The couple is due back in Naples Town Court Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
