Seventy-five dogs are being cared for at the Ontario County Humane Society's Animal Shelter after being removed from a home in Naples.
The dogs are all Cairn Terriers and range in age from a few months old to about 7-years-old. Many of them were discovered with fleas, parasites, rashes and other problems.
"So they came in riddled with fleas, and my staff was very gracious to handle it back here, giving them a bath as they came through to get rid of the majority of the fleas and we're in the process of getting them treated for internal parasites, and also going to be vaccinating them against any type of kennel cough or influenza that they might have in that house," said Diane Faas, Ontario County Animal Shelter manager.
Police were called to the home after receiving reports of dogs running around outside in and near the road. Officers were refused entry, so they returned with a warrant and seized the dogs.
Richard and Jane Justice are each charged with about 75 counts of cruelty to an animal and failure to provide food and water to an impounded animal.
Their home has been deemed unsafe, and condemned.
"This is something that we look at as getting them out of a bad situation and getting them into a better situation, this is what we do and we’re happy to do it for the sake of the animal," said Faas.
The Humane Society is asking for any donations of dog food, blankets, dog treats and toys along with monetary donations.
