The City of Rochester is planning to fight a State Supreme Court ruling that came down this morning, shooting down a referendum that would have allowed city voters to decide the fate of the Rochester City School District.
In an open letter not to parents or residents, but the children of Rochester Friday afternoon, Mayor Lovely Warren says the city will be appealing the decision.
A judge on Friday ruled a referendum that would let residents decide on a proposed takeover of the Rochester City School District is illegal.
He said as well intended as the city was, the RCSD Board of Education is a state agent. And thus, suspending the board and altering their pay is only an action the state can take.
Mayor Warren calls the decision a grave injustice.
“It is just the most recent example where adults twist and abuse the law to protect themselves at you and your family’s expense.” Warren said. “We will take this fight to the halls of Albany, and demand that our legislators act. We will ensure your voice is heard.”
