Casey Park, the town of Ontario park where a 3-year-old girl drowned earlier this week, is not opening its beach yet this summer because of a lack of lifeguards.

April Earlandt and her three girls were at Casey Park Friday like they often are.

“Just hanging out at the park, just waiting to go swimming at grandma’s,” Earlandt said.

And on a day like Friday…

“It’s hot! It’s like 85 degrees outside.” Earlandt said.

It would’ve been nice to take a dip in Casey Park’s pond.

“I was actually thinking it might be open today, and even with their clothes on, if they got too hot we could’ve jumped it," Earlandt said.

But Casey Park Beach is closed until further notice, due to a lack of lifeguards.

“I don’t know how we can fix getting more lifeguards,” Earlandt said.

Officials wouldn't speak on the matter, but park patrons understand the need for lifeguards, especially after Sunday’s drowning of Zyvette Marquez-Rivera.

“I think they should have lifeguards, being you don’t want something like that to happen again," Katie Breitung, who visits the park with her sister, said. "And if there was a lifeguard would that have happened? I don’t know, but, I would be nervous to have my kid come without a lifeguard.”

There is no timeline for when the beach may be back open.

And while Earlant's children have grandma's pool, others may not be that lucky.

“There’s not very many people you can go swimming unless you’ve got your own pool, or family that has a pool,” Earlandt said.
