The Wayne Central School District Board of Education has decided not to remove two of its members following an incident at Freewill Elementary in Walworth.
Dennis Landry and Steve Gallaher allegedly entered the building without authorization last fall, triggering an alarm.
Gallaher had been an ardent supporter of keeping the school open. The building shuttered two school years ago in a consolidation response to declining enrollment.
His attorney previously said his client discovered one of the front doors of the closed schools open and, with Landry, entered the school to learn more about the building's status.
"I would do it again because I was looking out for my district and my taxpayers and the public," said Landry.
Though they were not removed from the board both men were found guilty of official misconduct. The board found Gallaher guilty of inappropriate and unauthorized inquiry, as well as inappropriate postings on social media.
Landry was found guilty of making false and misleading statements and continued failure to disclose the truth.
Both embattled school board members were backed up by an overwhelming majority of the community.
"We're going to work together as a board," said Gallaher. "We want to make Wayne as great as it can be as a school district. We want to move forward, not backwards."
