The Greece Central School District says it’s issuing a notice to parents about an incident at Greece Athena involving pepper spray.

According to Greece Police and a district official, nearly five students got into a fight in the school cafeteria around 1 p.m. Wednesday. That's when a school resource officer used pepper spray while trying to intervene and break up the brawl.

While the pepper spray involved only the students in the fight, the district says others who were nearby were exposed. A district official says it's likely nearly two dozen students and staff suffered from respiratory and other issues as a result.

They were treated at the school, and no one was taken to the hospital.

In response, students spent the remainder of the school day in a "hold in place," which is similar to a lock down.

All after-school activities were canceled.

The district says students who were involved— all of whom were high schoolers— will be disciplined internally.
