Following a recent school shooting in Colorado, the Irondequoit Police Department receives another reason to help prepare and train the community.
- IPD held an Active Shooter Response Training held at the Irondequoit Public Library Thursday afternoon
- Though previous trainings concentrated on school and church settings, this session's focus is on local businesses, says Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Tantalo
- Chief Tantalo also believes the program is already paying off
IPD held an Active Shooter Response Training at the Irondequoit Public Library Thursday afternoon.
Debra Soley of Irondequoit anticipated the training to be very helpful.
“It’s very important for everybody to come out and learn a little bit about this because you always think it’s not going to happen to me, but recent events show otherwise,” said Soley.
Though previous trainings concentrated on school and church settings, this session's focus is on local businesses, says Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Tantalo.
“It is critical for us to be able to communicate with each other effectively and with a sense of purpose,” he said.
Identifying potentially dangerous behaviors from customers or coworkers, and using technology to alert police are topics discussed through the awareness and prevention program.
Debra Soley, attending as someone who lives and shops in the community, hopes the continued trainings will pay off. Chief Tantalo believes it is already paying off as more and more people fight back.
“I think people are feeling empowered, in a sense, they need to do something to stop the carnage and stop the destruction,” added Tantalo.
