IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — There's a public hearing in Irondequoit this evening about the proposal to reduce speed limits around town.
Supervisor Dave Seeley (D) says he wants to reduce the speed limits for the safety of all Irondequoit residents, especially children.
The proposal to amend Town Code includes reducing the motor vehicle speed in Irondequoit from 35 to 30 miles per hour, reducing speeds near every school to 25 and down to 20 miles per hour for roads located within 300 feet of a school.
Last year, 14-year-old Michael Lynch died after he was hit by a car while walking to school. Immediately following his death, the town created school speed zones near Irondequoit and Eastridge High Schools.
Seeley says many suburbs in Monroe County already have a town-wide speed limit of 30.
Under the proposal, county road Seabreeze Drive — north of Titus Avenue — will remain at 45 miles per hour.
The public hearing on the proposed changes to the speed limit is 7 p.m. Tuesday at Irondequoit Town Hall.
