CHURCHVILLE, N.Y. — Twenty-foot tall skeletons. Giant tentacles. Pirates. This may sound like a movie, but it is all part of a Halloween display near Rochester.

Tony DeMatteo has made wild decorations for years. He spends most of the winter creating an epic sea battle that takes over the front yard at his house in Churchville.

"It’s just sort of in my head,” DeMatteo said. "It's not really a design I think about too much."

It’s a family project. His kids help make some of the ships decorations. And even the neighbors get in on the fun.

“With the help of family and friends we can get it up in about a week, but I’m out here tweaking it every day,” DeMatteo said.

While the ships draw plenty of attention during the day, when the sun goes down is when the real show starts. Thousands drive down Ambush Lane, watching the ships come to life.

While neighbors enjoy the DeMatteo's Halloween tricks, they are also leaving some treats. Anyone stopping is asked to donate to Golisano Children’s Hospital or bring food to donate to Open Door Mission.

Last year, 3,000 pounds of food was donated.

“It generates a lot of excitement and we use that to give back to two great organizations,” DeMatteo explained.

The show runs from Oct. 29-31 from 5 to 10 p.m. on Ambush Lane in Churchville.
