ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester fitness coach is inviting seniors of all ages and abilities to get outside at Maplewood Park for some chair yoga.
One year ago, Anja Jabs-Devins was laid off from her job at the Maplewood YMCA. She turned that challenging time into something positive and started her own personal training business and fitness group classes called Movement with Anja. She has quite the "silver sneaker" following.
“There is absolutely nothing better than to be out here in the park and just be with the sun," said Jabs-Devins. "It’s nice to be outside. I encourage people to come out and just do what they can."
All summer, she’s hosting chair yoga two nights a week at Maplewood Park in Rochester. It’s $5 per class.
The hour-long yoga session includes movements, stretches and poses, both seated and standing. Bring a chair and a yoga mat or just put your toes in the grass.
“It is basically just like traditional yoga but we do not get on our knees or our hands and we do not lay down," said Jabs-Devins. "So that’s the only difference. We are doing almost everything exactly like a traditional yoga class."
Don Jermyn just got a new knee, so he’s putting it to good use.
"Anja does a good job," said Jermyn of Rochester. "She keeps you going and everything else. She is very nice and we really enjoyed her in the Silver Sneakers program too."
Movement with Anya Chair Yoga is every Tuesday and Thursday 6-7 p.m. at Maplewood Park in Rochester.
