WATERLOO, N.Y. — A historic building in Seneca County is being converted into affordable housing.
The village of Waterloo's Main Street School has sat vacant for almost 10 years.
The near-century-old building will soon be turned into 35 apartments for seniors age 62 and older. The school's auditorium will be preserved and transformed into a public event venue.
The project is projected to cost $13.5 million. It's all part of a $25 billion state investment to increase the supply of housing over the next five years by creating or preserving 100,000 homes across New York.
"Transforming the historic Main Street School into affordable housing is a great example of how state, local and private partners can work together to build stronger communities across New York," Gov. Kathy Hochul said. "This development is an important component of Waterloo's downtown revitalization and will provide modern and sustainable homes for seniors along with amenities that the entire community can enjoy."
Waterloo's three-story school was constructed in 1928.
