The University of Rochester's Wilmot Cancer Institute has been recognized as a prestigious federal cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. It is now the 73rd such designated cancer center in the United States.

The designation will unlock up to $10 million more in funding to enhance scientific discovery and access to high-quality care for cancer patients. It also places the institute in the top 4% of all cancer centers in the country.

The institute has been fulfilling a strategic plan over the past eight years in hopes of becoming an NCI-designated cancer center.

“This designation is the result of years of dedication by our team at Wilmot, with invaluable support from the university, medical center and our community,” said Jonathan Friedberg, director of the Wilmot Cancer Institute. “It marks an extraordinary milestone in the history of the cancer center at the University of Rochester, and we take great pride in what it means for our patients."

“This is a great day for the University of Rochester and the Wilmot Cancer Institute,” said U of R President Sarah Mangelsdorf. “Investing in Wilmot has been a university priority for more than a decade because we know how much cancer impacts the people in our region."
