Health officials in Seneca County are warning residents of an increase in reported cases of rabies over the last several months.

Officials say so far this summer, three confirmed cases have involved two raccoons and one fox. These cases have led to seven people getting medical treatment and rabies shots and four domestic animals receiving rabies booster shots and treatment.

Rabies is a virus that is potentially fatal if not treated and can be spread to animals or humans from an infected animal or bat's bite or scratch.

The Seneca County Environmental Health Division is hosting two upcoming free rabies vaccine clinics.

The first will be held Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ovid Fire Department on Brown Street. The second is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Waterloo Fire Department on East Water Street.
