1. Hochul worried impact of dismantling U.S. Education Department would have on school meals
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday calling for the dismantling of the U.S. Education Department, advancing a campaign promise to take apart an agency that’s been a longtime target of conservatives. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday she is worried about the impact of Trump’s plans.
2. Memo outlines state agencies' hiring instructions regarding Hochul's CO executive order
The New York state Office of Employee Relations released a memo Thursday instructing how state agencies determine eligible applicants for jobs to comply with Gov. Kathy Hochul’s March 10 executive order barring anyone who was terminated as a result of the recent correction officer strike from being hired at any state service job.
3. Weekend visitation resumes at nearly all corrections facilities across New York
Visitation resumes this weekend at most corrections facilities across New York state. The lone exception is Upstate Correctional Facility in Franklin County. Officials say that facility will remain closed until further notice.
4. RG&E says upgrades meant to reduce power outages in Webster are complete
Officials say the $3.3 million project is part of its resiliency program to improve reliability across the company's entire service area by 2027.
5. Consumers could pay as much as 50% of upcoming tariffs, economist says
Two weeks before the Trump administration is expected to impose reciprocal tariffs on its trading partners, economists say prices are likely to rise as a result. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that inflation is likely to increase because of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
6. TikTok launches Amber Alerts to help find missing children
TikTok has partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to send Amber Alerts, the social media network announced Thursday. The real-time alerts will be pushed to users’ feeds in the missing child’s designated search area after law enforcement first issues them.

New York lawmakers eye remedy of Child Victims Act after case dismissal
State lawmakers said Wednesday they will examine how to remedy state law that allowed survivors of childhood sexual assault to hold their abusers accountable after New York's top court dismissed a lawsuit against the state filed under the Child Victims Act.
The state Court of Appeals dismissed a case Tuesday of alleged child-sex abuse a man claims took place at a state-run theater in the late '80s. Justices argued the case lacked sufficient information to bring a claim against the state.
The top court's decision reveals a gap in the law for other Child Victims Act cases filed in the Court of Claims against state officials or publicly owned institutions.
