A spokesperson for the Rochester City School District said the board of education will decide Thursday night to cut 109 jobs, not more than 150 jobs as originally projected.

The reductions in potential layoffs, as a result of a looming budget deficit, were done with the help of the New York State Education Department, which assisted RCSD with the federal title grant process.

The department helped find federal funds RCSD is able to apply towards for the retention of teachers through the end of the current budget year ending June 30.

The Rochester Teachers Association says it still wants any layoffs to be delayed until June.

If the board approves the cuts tonight, it would take effect January 1, meaning some teachers could tell their students goodbye tomorrow during the last day of this semester.

Prior to the highly anticipated meeting, protesters marched outside the RCSD offices to voice their concerns on the possibility of teacher layoffs in the district.
