GREECE, N.Y. — Some Greece Athena students advanced to the next round in the online Michael Bublé and Derek Hough “Higher” dance competition. They’ll need your votes to get to the finale.
The Gigg Challenge with Michael Bublé and Derek Hough has social media users of all ages sending in dance videos to Michael Bublé’s new song, "Higher" to win a dream trip to LA. Three hundred entries are now down to 50.
Greece Athena teacher Courtney Larkin and her dance video entry with students Nathan Litz, Makayla Robinson, Julia Mitchell and Larissa Clifford is still in the running.
“I direct and choreograph the middle school shows,” Larkin said. “I am very good friends with their parents so I texted their parents and was like I have a weird idea can we go for this. And everyone was like yes, let’s do it.”
Larkin choreographed the dance and in just two days they learned it, recorded it and entered the contest.
“I was like higher, higher how can I playoff the title of the song?” Larkin said. “So I was like wait, I can do teaching to get a higher grade so that is where the title of the piece, “Dance Your Way to a Higher Grade” came from.”
“We came in and performed and learned the dance and we did it over and over again with other people joining in and we finally did the rehearsals at a dance studio,” Greece Athena senior Nathan Litz said. “We got it all together and recorded the video.”
Litz and Robinson are accomplished dancers but this fun, online international contest is a blast. They are reminding friends and family to vote once a day, every day.
“I just told every person I know to vote and on social media to vote. I tell my friends every single morning to vote. Hopefully they are actually voting,” laughed Makayla Robinson, a junior at Greece Athena.
The winner will be announced Nov. 7. To vote for the Greece Athena dance video head to Gigg.
