ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police say two women are dead and one is hospitalized following a shooting that involved an area police officer.

The RPD says officers were called to Costar Street near Saratoga Avenue shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they say they found three women suffering from gunshot wounds.

Angely Solis, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Tiffani Gatson, 29, died shortly after being brought to UR Medical Center, according to investigators.

A third woman, described by officials as being in her 30s, was shot multiple times in the upper body, but her injuries are considered non-life-threatening. Police are not releasing her identity at this time.

Rochester police say the incident was the result of a domestic altercation. They say Gatson was a police officer with the Greece Police Department and that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting the two other women.

Greece Police Chief Michael Wood released this statement on Tuesday:

"On behalf of the Town of Greece Police Department, I would like to express our collective sorrow and grief with respect to last night’s events in the City of Rochester. Tiffani Gatson had been a police officer in the Town of Greece since September 2018 and was recently assigned to the road patrol working the afternoon shift, 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. She was off-duty when this incident occurred. We are working in cooperation with the Rochester Police Department and New York State Attorney General’s Office, which has jurisdiction over this criminal investigation.

"Unfortunately, we have seen events of this nature occur all too frequently and struggle to find answers in the aftermath. The effects are far-reaching, from those who have lost loved ones to others throughout law enforcement organizations when a police officer commits such a horrible act, to our entire community. It is simply devastating, and so many people are hurting right now. Allowing people to grieve is of paramount importance to me and providing the appropriate level of support within our organization.

"In closing, I would like to extend our most sincere and heartfelt sympathies to the families of everyone involved last night and all others impacted by this unspeakable tragedy."

The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation announced Tuesday that it has opened an investigation into Solis’ death.

The AG's office says the RPD recovered a handgun at the scene, and officials determined the Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun is not Gatson's service weapon.
