ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Police say a Florida man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting on a Rochester school playground. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
Derrick Gunter, 21, is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the RPD. Police say Gunter shot and killed Waltequaries Evans, 25, near School 17 on Orchard Street around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
As officers were responding to the scene, they say Evans was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to investigators.
The RPD says Evans was a survivor of an arson on Grape Street in 2012 that claimed the lives of four children. Evans was 15 at the time and suffered burns to his arms and ears as he escaped the home.
Evan's death marks Rochester's 80th homicide of this year.
