ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police have identified the man fatally shot on Karnes Street early Wednesday morning.
Police say Kelvin Harris Jr., 34, died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
Officers responded to the Lyell-Otis neighborhood shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday. An investigation into the shooting shut down the street. Family members stood by throughout the early morning waiting for answers and supporting each other.
Minutes before the shooting, the organization Uniting & Healing Through Hope of Monroe County announced it would hold a news conference with church leaders on Wednesday. It has also planned anti-violence marches and community conversations for Thursday and Saturday.
Founder Clay Harris spoke with Spectrum News 1 last week about the work he and his organization have been doing to end violence.
"We have your back, God has your back, and we’re going to protect each other," said Harris. "Because we got to root out this violence that’s among us. Because if we don’t it’s just going to get worse."
Police say there are no suspects in custody and an investigation is ongoing.
This marks Rochester's 39th homicide of 2021, keeping the city on pace for a record this year.
