ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police are investigating the city's 34th deadly shooting this year.

Officers responded to the intersection of Jay and Orchard streets just before 9 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a person shot. When they arrived, they say they found two men, one in his 20s and the other in his 30s, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were taken to URMC.

According to police, Shaka Nesmith, 26, died shortly after arrival at the hospital. They say the second man was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police believe Nesmith was inside his vehicle and the survivor was standing outside it when at least two suspects fired multiple shots at them from a moving car. The drive-by shooting is not considered to be a random incident, according to investigators.

The Major Crimes Unit is handling the investigation and is asking anyone with any information to call 911, the Major Crimes Unit at 585-428-7157, Crime Stoppers at 585-423-9300 or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.

According to RPD's data portal, there have been 16 more homicides this year than there were at the same time last year.
