ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police say a man who was deliberately set on fire last week on Lyell Avenue has died at the hospital.

The incident happened Friday at the victim's apartment.

Police tell Spectrum News Steven Amenhauser suffered burns to 70% of his body after they allege a 14-year-old and 16-year-old boy doused him in flammable liquid and intentionally set him on fire.

Amenhauser, 53, had been in critical condition at Strong Hospital’s Burn Unit until he died on Tuesday.

Investigators are still trying to figure out how he and the teens knew each other, but say they are not related.

Spectrum News spoke with several people in the area who did not want to go on camera, but they all said the same thing.

"It was like ten cops out here and the fire department and technician units. I thought somebody got killed. Someone being set on fire, that’s something really, like, crazy. I wonder why it was, and a lot of people still have unanswered questions. Why it happened? Why you’d do this?" Timothy said.

The names of the teenagers are not being released due to their age.

Both are charged with assault. The 14-year-old faces an arson charge and is in the custody of the Office of Children and Family Services.

The 16-year-old is charged with first-degree assault and second-degree attempted arson, according to authorities. He was arraigned in Monroe County Youth Court and taken to the Monroe County Children's Center.

Rochester police say they are working with the Monroe County District Attorney's Office in regards to upgrading the charges against the teens following the death of the victim.
