BRIGHTON, N.Y. — The cars keep coming and coming at the New York State Department of Health’s drive-through testing site at Monroe Community College’s Brighton Campus.

“The drive-through site that the state has run since May has been one of the busier, more popular ones around the state historically since it started in May," said Gary Holmes, New York State Department of Health spokesperson.

Holmes says there’s a recent increase in requests for COVID-19 tests, following the recent spike in cases.

“The community increases in the rates here and in that part of the state and in other parts of the state as well are concerning. And what we need is New Yorkers to bring the same level of vigilance they brought when we brought those rates to lower than 1% over the summer. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done to get them back to that level," he said.

Since May, some 85,000 tests have been conducted at the location, as folks continue to line up their cars.

“It’s a pretty user-friendly practice and the Rochester site’s been one of our more efficient ones," Holmes said.

If you want to go and get a test there, it is by appointment only. You can contact the New York State Department of Health at 1-888-364-3065 or go the state’s website coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-testing.

“Make your appointment, they’ll ask you your name, they’ll ask you your date of birth, they’ll ask you for your phone number. Then ultimately when you go through the drive-through, you line up, you follow the directions there," Holmes said.

You’ll be asked to keep your car windows closed, put your ID on the dashboard and folks outside will use signs to guide you.

“It’s quick and it’s easy. It’s not fun for anybody but it’s an important part of this process here," Holmes said.

Holmes says, in 95% of the cases, the turnaround time for results is within three days.

Tests there are free and you do not need to have a reason, such as symptoms or contact with someone positive, to get a test there.
