Grocery store chains Wegmans and Tops say they will now require all customers to wear face coverings in their New York state stores.
Wegmans sent an email to customers on Friday saying it was done to comply with Gov. Cuomo's executive order.
"During these unprecedented times, we want you to know our doors remain open and we are here to help," the email reads. "To comply with the Executive Order of the Governor, all customers must now wear a cloth face covering, such as a fabric mask, scarf, or bandana, over their mouth while shopping at any of our New Your State stores."
Wegmans tells Spectrum News they will not stop customers from entering without one, however.
"We will not put our people in the position of having to deny entry to our stores. That said, we ask that all customers comply with the mandate as it is best for everyone. We have additional signage in parking lots and as you enter the store to remind customers to wear a mask."
Tops made a similar announcement on its website, saying:
"In accordance with state Executive Orders, it is now required for customers to wear face coverings when in a public place and unable to maintain social distance. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in adhering to this Executive Order and while shopping in our Tops stores."
