A Greece grocery store owner says he won’t allow customers in who are not wearing protective face masks. Bill Dell, owner of Dell’s Market, says it’s a matter of safety.
New York’s new rules about wearing personal protective masks prompted the move. Dell says in his small store, it’s nearly impossible to keep customers and cashiers six feet apart.
“Unfortunately, what's right is uncomfortable,” said Dell. “If my customers can't feel safe coming here, then I haven't done my job.”
Dell says customers who don’t wish to wear masks can still receive free home delivery if they spend at least $25. Curbside pickup is also available. But customers who refuse to wear masks will be refused entry.
This week, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order requiring people to wear masks in public, in situations where social distancing isn’t guaranteed. Essential workers are already required to wear masks when dealing with the public, under a prior order.
“Everybody comes at it differently,” said Dell. “Some people are positive about it. Some people are terrified about it.”
Dell is also selling masks, handmade by a local woman — for $4.99 each. He receives 50-60 masks per day, and they go on sale at 11:30 a.m. daily. Judy Giordano was one customer lucky enough to pick up a few masks Thursday, before the daily supply ran out.
Giordano agrees with the store’s new mask requirement.
“I think that's the way it should be,” said Giordano, who says the masks are critical for her family because she has a disabled daughter with a compromised immune system. “I think we all need to protect each other. That's the only way we're going to get through this, is to protect each other.”
Dell says a handful of people have complained about his new policy on social media, but he says most support it. It’s a new way of doing business — in a new world.
“Together, I think we're all going to get through this,” he said. “And we just got to do what's right.”
And while stores like Dell's Market are refusing entry, Wegmans tells Spectrum News that customers are still allowed to shop at their locations without a face mask, though they're encouraged to wear one.
"We strongly encourage customers to wear a face covering while shopping in our stores in adherence to the Governor’s executive order. We are focused on complying with all local and state mandates, while keeping the health and safety of our employees and customers a top priority, and that includes minimizing the likelihood of conflicts in our stores. Short of refusing entrance to our stores, we are doing everything we can to educate our customers of the mandate and stress the importance of voluntary compliance to keep themselves and everyone around them safe. We have put a number of social distancing measures in place throughout our stores, however we continue to follow the guidance of the CDC, which recommends people wear a face covering when out in public to help slow the spread of the virus."
